Superlift 4xAdventure 2000
Perfect weather embraced all 97 entries at this years second annual Superlift 4xAdventure. About the only hiccup all weekend long was during the morning of the first day when we were told by the forest service that 3 pre-approved trails had to be modified and one trail had to be eliminated because some endangered wood peckers had been sighted in the area. With the first ride scheduled to leave within an hour, maps were quickly pulled out and some quick decision making was made combining some groups together. We were under the microscope of the environmentalists and could not afford to screw things up. At the drivers meetings thorough instructions were given to all participants on what they could and could not do. The Ocala Jeep club had more than enough volunteers to handle the trail rides while the South Marion 4x4 Club handled all the duties at the Rodman sand box and 573 mud pit. Participants from as far away as Massachusetts were treated to all sorts of trail rides. From the 2 wheel drive in the park to some down right nasty conditions. The evening of the first day saw several vehicles coming back on the strap which attested to the severity of the more difficult rides. The sand drags took its toll on some 4x4's drive lines including grenading a brand new V8 conversion in a Nissan Pathfinder. Some free hot food was served up and stories were traded though out the night. The next day it was on to some more trail rides but another problem surfaced. No one signed up for the easy trail rides and groups had to be shuffled again. All I can say from this experience is that Hummers and Jeeps definitely should not ride in the same groups. It seems that one particular owner of a brand new $100,000 Hummer complete with satellite dish, TV, VCR microwave and hot shower didn't care for the tight Jeep trails he found himself on and had to leave the group early to find a wider route (read less scratches) to the 573 mud pit. Once there everyone was invited to try their luck at a100 foot long slosh pit of orange sticky clay. Several members gave it a whirl and slung some clay and actually surprised the crowd as well as themselves. Others entertained themselves on the paint ball driving obstacle course. That evening the prize raffle was conducted and several members managed to walk away with some goodies. But it was our own Dale Gibson who walked away with the grand prize. A brand new 8000# Ramsey winch! During the final day a few trail rides were conducted but most entrants had to leave early for the ride home. Entrants enjoyed the local scenery that we all take for granted and thanked us for a fun filled weekend. A quick chat with the Forest Service Representative indicated that there was no trouble and that the event went off without a complaint. Plans have already begun for next years event. At this time I would like to thank all the volunteers out there for conducting yourselves in nothing short of a professional manner. This will go a long way in changing the attitude that some people have of us. One participant told me that he had been to several similar events in the past but this one was by far the most organized one he has ever attended. Give yourselves a pat on the back.
