Jeff’s 4X4 Custom Rock Bars   by Scott Montgomery

Over the past few months I have been researching different companies rocker panel protection methods.  I really liked the look of Currie’s and Sun Performance's low profile approach but was suspect of the strength of the thin gauge plate steel construction.  I liked the strength offered by Tomken’s 2X4 boxed steel approach but did not like the way they attach to the frame.  I was just about to order a set of the Tomken bars to have them modified to suit my needs when Jeff Priest, owner of Jeff’s 4X4 in Crystal River FL offered to build me a custom set.

Jeff used heavy wall 2X4 boxed steel that he cut to length then and boxed the ends at a 45 degree angle to help my Jeep slide over obstacles.  He then ground down all the welds for a neat appearance.  Next Jeff designed a mounting system that allowed him to support the legs of my full rollcage.  He designed it so that the floor plates that support the cage legs won’t punch through my Jeep’s floor in the event of a rollover.  He used 2X2 boxed steel along with 1/4  plate steel to attach the bars to my Jeeps frame.  I chose and Jeff preferred to weld the bars to my Jeep’s frame but Jeff can also construct a bolt on set.  Once Jeff was sure of the mounting position he went to work finish welding everything.  Just when I thought he was finished and I was completely satisfied,  Jeff looked at me and said “Now I can start on the gussets.”  Jeff than began constructing gussets out of 1/4 plate steel to reinforce everything.  Let me just say, when Jeff build something, he makes sure its STRONG!

A quick note- due to Jeff’s ability to custom fabricate mounts, he can mount the bars in just about any position on your Jeeps frame to compensate for body lifts.  My bars are flush mounted to the bottom of my rocker panels even with my 1” body lift.  He can do the same for no, 2”, and 3” body lifts as well.   He can also space them just about any distance from the frame you want.

Now back to the install- Once all the mounting was finished, Jeff primed and painted the bars black.  Now for the best part, Jeff will build these bars for just about the same cost as any of the other bars on the market.  My set, with all the extras cost $300 installed!  If you consider all the added features and strength offered by Jeff’s 4X4 Custom Rock Bars, $300 is a bargin.

So I’m sure your wondering how they hold up.  Well I beat the crap out of them bashing into rocks on my last trip to Tellico N.C. and the bars came through with barely a scratch.  No dings, dents, or bends at all!  They will easily support the weight of my Jeep so I can use them as a jacking point for my Hi-Lift jack.  Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the quality and strength of Jeff’s 4X4 Custom Rock Bars and I would recommend them to looking for rocker panel protection.
