The terrain in New Mexico is vastly different from Florida, and thus the way in which the Jeeps are built are different. The priority is on low center of gravity and longer wheelbase. Folks aren't scared to cut sheetmetal here! Check out this modified TJ - 35" tires on a mild lift, but radically cut out rear fenders to accomodate wheel travel. The use of the front TJ flares on the rear fenders is novel. Look at how the original rear crossmember was used as an integal part of the rear tire carrier.
These are two examples of modified CJ's - both have modified cut tubs and a coil sprung three link rear end. They run 36-38" Swamper SXs with a front ARB. The red CJ used a gear-shift mounted air shifter to activate the ARB, and a rear fuel cell in place of a rear seat. Here's a closeup of the rear suspension mods of another modified CJ. The rear axle was relocated to give a wheelbase of 100". This driver installed a 3.9 liter Cummins diesel engine. This buggy walked over everything on our ride with them! |
