2nd Ocklawaha Jamboree
January 2001
Over two hundred people representing eight clubs joined in the
fun as the OJC hosted the 2nd Annual Ocklawaha Jamboree. This year's event was
bigger and better organized than last year, and the weather was picture perfect!
Saturday was a mix of trail rides in the morning, followed by events in the
afternoon. The Blind Man's Run was again a good example of why friends shouldn't
friends drive blind as we watched drivers smack trees and wander aimlessly in
the sand under the guidance of their copilots. Walt Krumm clearly had the
fastest time but was disqualified for running the course backwards! A impromptu
Sand Drag followed as we lined 'em up side by side. It quickly became obvious
that tire pressure and judicious use of the clutch and throttle was more
important than V8 power as there were some surprise winners in this event.
Saturday evening's camp dinner was a spectacle as everyone lined up to consume 8
fried turkeys, a case of hamburgers, and 5 gallons of commode-busting OJC camp
chili. We had a great 50/50 and raffle, with prizes that included ProComp
shocks, offroad lights, and T-shirts. Afterwards we all left again - some for a
nightime scavenger hunt through the forest, and others who wanted a taste of the
infamous Jeep-killing Mud Road. Scott Allen did a good job of convincing
everyone how shallow and solid the TankTraps had become...only to demonstrate
that it may take a little more than 8 inches of lift and 38" tires to make
it! Sunday's events shifted over to Eureka Pit, where everyone enjoyed the Slow
Crawl contest through the pines, and I'm sure Shorty's odometer probably rolled
back 50 miles as he volunteered his Jeep as deadweight for the Truck Pull up a
sugar sand slope. Brian Shipley, Scott Allen, and Ray Woo all boasted Full Pulls
and full bragging rights for another year. The remainder of the weekend was
spent....well, eating, sleeping, and riding. Before breaking up and leaving
camp, "Stuck-Again-Glen" Dosey wrapped things up as he led us to a new
ultra-tight pit area...and once again managed to reaffirm his nickname! |
