Members Clear Hiking Trail Early morning thunderstorms did not deter 16 members from helping to establish the new "Yearling" hiking trail in the Juniper Wilderness Area last month. They were guided under the direction of forest ranger Johnnie Pohlers, who in his own words "was delighted by the turn out" and "cleared more trail than he anticipated". Vice president Ray Woo was also instrumental in encouraging (threatening) weary campers to work beyond their limits in clearing approx. 1 mile of trail. It was a good time for all including Ellen Priest who almost picked up a pigmy rattle snake that just happened to be in the way of the trail. This was one of many activities conducted throughout the weekend including 2 night trail rides (one going way into the early morning). Several day trail rides were also conducted including two new areas affectionately know as "whoopdeedoo and whoopdeetwo". These areas offered plenty of the twisty stuff to get caught up into. During the Saturday night cookout there was plenty of hamburgers and hot dogs to go around for everyone that attended. Jeff Priest brought out the new RED club articulation ramp for everyone to try out. If you get a chance, stop by Jeffs 4x4 in Crystal River and take a look at the absolutely fabulous job he and some other volunteers did on this ramp. Its first class all the way and can be transported with ease. Very impressive. A job well done guys. Wilsons 4x4 had close to 200 Jeeps go through their gates last month for their Show-n-Shine. 15 OJC Jeeps made the drive over to their Holly Hill shop to participate in the festivities. Hot weather, as usual, did not deter people from showing up and showing off. Jim & June Wilson served up a great time along with plenty of free food and soft drinks. Our own show, Jeeptoberfest99, is fast approaching. The committee has ordered all 24 trophies which will be given away with Scott Allen of Phillips Jeep picking up the tab. Windshield decals have been ordered and were continually receiving packages from major manufacturers in the 4x4 industry for door prizes. Items already received include hats, t-shirts, snatch straps, tow hooks, a set of shocks, 50% off a Borla Exhaust and a ARB $250 gift certificate. Oh and lets not forget that set of BFG tires. Let me remind everyone that the first 40 entries will receive goody bags that will be well stuffed. So get those entries mailed in early. Other events are the year end party at Beth & Ernie Prevedels farm in Lady Lake which will include nominations for next years officers. If anyone is interested in these high profile, zero paying jobs, this is your chance. The Christmas parades are coming up. The deadline for application to the Ocala parade is Oct. 15. Please contact chairman Troy Dunn ASAP if your interested . Sign up sheets for all the parades will be at the monthly meetings. |
